Needlesstosay,thefilmisn'ttobecommendedonitshistoricalaccuracy.Asanyhistorianwilltellyou,theAlexandreDumasversionofFrenchhistoryiswildlyfanciful,tosaytheleast.However,thisdoesn'tpreventLaTourdeNeslefrombeinganentertainingand,attimes,highlypoignant,pieceofcinema. Whilstthecharacterisationanddialogueleavemuchtobedesired,theplot(amurkytaleofcruelrevengeandpoliticalintrigue)isgripping,andthefilm'sartisticdesignisexceptionalforafilmofthisperiod.Gancebringsastrangelyexpressionistictouchtohisuseofcolourandshade,somethingwhichaddstothedarklysinisternatureoftheplot,whilstimbuingthefilmwithastrikingsenseofhistoricalrealism.Apropos,Gance'sassistantdirectorNellyKaplanmakesherscreendébutinasmallrole,shortlybeforesheherselfembarkedonasuccessfulfilmmakingcareer.
